What Is a Data Transfer?
When you get a new computer, everything important lives on your old one – years of photos, work documents, saved emails, browser bookmarks, and personal settings. A data transfer is the process of moving all of that from your old machine to your new one, so nothing is left behind and you do not have to start from scratch.
Technogeek performs professional data transfers at our North Lakes workshop. You bring in both your old and new computers, and we handle the rest. Once complete, we verify everything has transferred correctly before you collect your machines.
This service is available to anyone getting a new computer – not just those purchasing through us. If you have bought a machine elsewhere and need your data moved across, we can help.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a data transfer take?
It depends on how much data you have. A typical home computer transfer takes between 1 and 3 hours. If you have very large amounts of data (hundreds of gigabytes of video etc.), it may take longer. We will give you an estimate when you drop in.
Do I need to bring both computers in?
Yes. We need both the old and the new machine at the workshop to perform the transfer. If your new computer was purchased through us, we will arrange the transfer at the same time as your collection.
Will my files be safe during the transfer?
Yes. We copy your data rather than move it – your old machine retains everything until you are satisfied the transfer is complete. We verify the transfer with you before you leave.
Can you transfer data if I only have one computer?
If you have an external drive or USB containing your files, we can transfer from that to your new machine. Otherwise both computers need to be present.
My old computer is very slow – can you still transfer the data?
Usually yes, though it may take longer. As long as the old computer can start up and the drive is accessible, we can transfer the data. If the drive has failed entirely, you would need our data recovery service first.
Can you also set up my new computer while it's in?
Yes. We can set up your new machine, install your email client, connect your printer, install essential software and get you fully ready to go as part of the same visit. Just let us know what you need when you book.
