When you turn on your computer and it makes all the right noises and the lights come on, it can be frustrating when nothing appears on the screen. Before assuming the worst, there are a few simple things worth trying first.

Start by borrowing a monitor from a friend or neighbour - this is much easier than it used to be with modern flat screens. If the borrowed monitor works, your original screen is the problem. If you still get nothing, swap your cable too, as a faulty cable is a surprisingly common cause.

Still no display? It could be your graphics card. If you have a dedicated card, testing with a replacement can be tricky. If you are using onboard graphics, a dedicated card could be worth trying - though this involves opening your PC and configuring the BIOS, which we do not recommend unless you are trained to do so.

The key point is this - do not go buying anything until you know exactly what needs replacing. For most people, diagnosing a no-display fault and sourcing the right parts is not something they want to tackle alone.
